Abstract

English version

If references are made to Emmanuel Levinas in philosophical discussions, in at least some theoretical contexts they do not go beyond quoting “the other”, whom we owe morality. Levinas’ work is still perceived as metaphysically loaded and too implausible because of its radicalism. This largely overlooks that Levinas also states that we never only live with one, but rather with many others, and therefore face the question of how we can be fair to everybody. It is also often not further reflected that for Levinas, this question does not belong to the field of Ethics anymore, but to Politics. In order to highlight the relation between Ethics and Politics in Levinas work in regard to the dialogue with other theoretical approaches, I will firstly recall the basic assumptions of his philosophy. In a second step I will consider to what extent a reference to his work can be fruitful for other moral philosophical approaches. Finally, I will present to what extent it is reasonable also for theories building on Levinas work, to open themselves toward other traditions of Philosophy.
